  三、阅读理解(8分) ( A )

My father had returned from his business visit to London when I came in, rather late, to supper. I could tell at once that he and my mother had been discussing something. In that half-playful, half-serious way I knew so well, he said, "How would you like to go to Eton?"

"You bet," I cried quickly catching the joke. Everyone knew it was the most expensive, the most famous of schools. You had to be entered at birth, if not before. Besides, even at 12or 13, I understood my father. He disliked any form of showing off . He always knew his proper station in life, which was in the middle of the middle class, our house was medium-sized; he had avoided joining Royal Liverpool Golf Club and went to a remarkably low price, he felt embarrassed driving it, and quickly changed it for an Austin 1100.

This could only be his delightful way of telling me that the whole boarding school idea was to be dropped :Alas! I should also have remembered that he had a liking for being different from everyone else, if it did not conflict with his fear of drawing attention to himself.

He seemed to have talked to Graham Brown of the London office, a very nice fellow, and Graham had a friend who had just entered his boy at the school, and while he was in that part of the world he thought he might just as well phone them. I remembered my eyes stinging and my hands shaking with the puzzlement of my feelings. There was excitement, at the heart of great sadness.

"Oh, he doesn't want to go away," said my mother, "You shouldn't go on like this." "It's up to him." Said my father. "He can make up his own mind."

  ( )1. The writer's house was __________.

  A. the best in the local area. B. right for their social position

  C. for showing off. D. rather small.

( )2. His father sold his Rolls-Royce because_________.

  A. it made him feel uneasy. B. it was too old to work well.

  C. it was too expensive to possess. D. it was too cheap.

( )3. The writer's father enjoyed being different as long as _______.

  A. it drew attention. B. it didn't bring him in arguments.

  C. it was understood as a joke. D. there was no danger of his showing off.

( )4. What was the writer's reaction to the idea of going to Eton?

  A. He was very unhappy. B. he didn't believe it.

  C. He was delighted D. he had mixed feeling.

( )5. We can know from the passage that ________.

  B. Children can go to Eton if they will.

  C. It is very difficult for a child to get admitted by Eton

  D. Children don't have the right to decide whether they will go to Eton at all.

Australia, the last continent, was discovered by ships belonging to some European

nations in the seventeenth century. These nations were less interesting in changing it into colony than in exploring it. As in the early history of the United States, it was the English who set up the settlements in Australia. This history and the geography of these two British colonies have some other things in common as well.

Australia and the United State are about the same in size, and their western lands are both not rich in soil. It was the eastern coast of Australia and America that the English first settled, and both colonies soon began to develop towards the west. However, this westward movement took place more because the English were searching for better land than because the population was increasing. Settlements of the western part of both countries developed quickly after gold was discovered in America in 1849, two years later in Australia.

Although the development of these two countries has a lot in common, there are some striking differences as well. The United States gained its independence from England by revolution while Australia won its independence without having to go to war. Australia, unlike the United State, was firstly turned into a colony by English prisoners and its economic development was in wheat growing and sheep raising. By 1922, for example, Australia had fifteen times more sheep than it had people, or almost half as many sheep as there are people today in the United States. Yet, in spite of these and other main differences, Australia and the United States have more in common with each other than either one has with most of the rest of the world.

( )6. Who turned Australia into a colony?

  A. Britain. B. Several European countries.

  C. The United States. D. None of the above.

( )7. In the early history of America and Australia, both colonies developed towards the west first for the reason that________?

  A. the population was increasing rapidly in the east.

  B. The English thought there might be richer land there..

  C. Gold was discovered there. D. fewer people lived there.

  ( )8. In the early 1920s, ________.

  A. Australia had one fifteenth as many people as sheep.

  B. There were more than sheep in Australia than in the United States.

  C. The population in Australia was greater than that of the United States.

  D. The United States had twice as many sheep as people
